The newest study published in JAMA Network indicates that if you want to slim down while still keeping your lifestyle habits, all it takes is one extra hour of sleep.

Sleeping around 8 hours a day can help lower our food intake. So, we can get a slimmer figure without having to change what we eat or how often we work out.

Speaking in the context of the aforementioned study, its 80 participants cut an average of 270 calories off their plates daily when they slept an hour and 12 minutes more. However, some of them even managed to reduce their daily calorie intake by as much as 500 calories. This translates to one full breakfast.

The randomized 6-years-long study involved overweight people with a BMI in the range from 25 to 29.9. What’s also important to mention is that they didn’t make any additional changes in their diet or levels of physical activity.

These 21–40-year-olds were habitually sleeping less than six and a half hours a night when they were asked to increase their sleep time for the study.

The results were as quick as with every rigorous diet. In only two weeks, participants started losing weight. On the basis of this observation, scientists concluded that an average person will lose about 26 pounds in three years or more (or 8.6 pounds a year) if they sleep more.

What this means is that currently, around 31% of the adult US citizens who are considered overweight would do wisely to invest in effective natural sleep aids or create a more comfortable sleep environment than in pricey and potentially ineffective weight-loss treatments.

Still, the fact that sufficient, invigorating sleep facilitates weight loss is no news. Other studies have shown that sleep regulates two main hormones in our body related to weight gain:
