A recent study found that quality sleep helps prevent suicidal thoughts in young people.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is well-known that adolescents and young adults contemplate suicide <\/span>a lot<\/span><\/i> more than older generations \u2014 a cognitive phenomenon known as <\/span>suicidal ideation<\/b> (SI). As a matter of fact, suicide is the <\/span>second most common cause of mortality<\/span><\/a> for young adults and adolescents in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, a new <\/span>Rutgers University<\/span> study, <\/span>led by <\/span>Jessica L. Hamilton, Ph.D. of the Department of Psychology at Rutgers, suggests we can lower said figures by <\/span>improving sleep<\/b>. Namely, <\/span>sleep promotes emotional control<\/span><\/a> and also boosts positive affective reactivity \u2014 the level of <\/span>emotional reaction people exhibit during specific events.<\/span><\/p>\n

The study was conducted in a <\/span>predominantly female<\/b> (75%) study group of <\/span>59 participants<\/span><\/a> aged 13 to 23 years, 44% of which had already attempted suicide. Moreover, researchers surveyed their sleeping patterns, SI, and affective reactivity through lengthy questionnaires.<\/span><\/p>\n

More precisely, participants were asked to note the level of their negative or positive thoughts related to events from 0 to 100. The results found that sleep quality primarily affected affective reactivity, with some minor personal differences.<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, subjects that didn\u2019t get enough sleep were less <\/span>likely to react positively to positive interpersonal events<\/b>.<\/span> Conversely, well-rested participants were more likely to react positively to desired events and had fewer negative overreactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides the sleep duration, the doze-off schedule also proved essential in managing SI. In fact, those who went to bed later had <\/span>fewer positive reactions to undesired events<\/b> and more negative ones \u2014 hence why the team deduced <\/span>cognitive behavioral methods could help lower suicidal tendencies.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
