Meet Rochester — The World Capital of Insomnia

With increasing climate change and rising economic uncertainties, getting some decent shut-eye has become a luxury for many. Still, if you thought you had it bad, wait ‘till you hear how the residents of Rochester, NY, are doing.
According to a recent social media study, Rochester is the most challenging place to fall asleep on the entire planet!
After analyzing the location and frequency of countless sleep-stress-related phrases and keywords on Twitter posts, researchers deduced that this city has definitely seen better days, or should we say — nights.
Terms like woke up, sleep, slept, and nap were evaluated with the help of the latest software called TensStrength. The analysis determined Rochester had a whopping 55.21% sleep-stress rate, the highest of any place.
Moreover, Chile was the second most sleep-stressed country, with 59.13% of sleep-related tweets, and Alabama was the worst US state, with a 63.43% sleep stress rate.
Yet, it’s not just insomnia that determines the most sleep-deprived countries in the world — it’s actually the length of sleep. According to this, Japan and Saudi Arabia are at the very bottom of the list.
Ever since the study was published, experts have wondered why it’s so hard for the inhabitants of Rochester to get some restful sleep. Some believe that weather patterns and other environmental factors are to blame. But we can’t say for sure.
For people living in more densely populated metropolitan areas, noise and light pollution are the leading cause of restless nights. In fact, this occurrence is a well-defined sleeping disorder appropriately named — environmental sleep disorder.
However, not everyone is convinced by the study’s finds. Many scientists believe that Rochester isn’t an isolated case and that many more insomnia-ridden places are scattered around the globe.
