The Original Purple Pillow Review
Materials and Construction
The original Purple Pillow is the only flat, single-sided pillow this brand offers. The internal hyper-elastic polymer grid (the Purple grid) in this pillow resembles what’s used in Purple mattresses, but in a noticeably softer version.
The same air channels that keep Purple mattresses comfortable and cool do their trick in the Purple Pillow as well, making it highly breathable, as any Purple bed pillow review can attest.
The original Purple Pillow comes with a thin, stretchy, removable cover (made out of nylon, spandex, and polyester) and two pillow boosters made of polyurethane and purple-colored foam.
Feel
Very Comfortable. The even-pressured technology in this pillow will effortlessly support your neck and head. You simply need to adjust it to the right loft, and your neck muscles will be thankful, as many reviews of the Purple Pillow from customers claim.
Side sleepers and those who need extra loft will appreciate the pillow boosters since the original pillow itself measures only 3″.
However, if you only use the pillow without the boosters, you don’t need to worry—your head won’t sink thanks to the solid support of its unique material.
Unique. If you haven’t tried other polymer products from Purple, this will be a different experience for you. As any new Purple Pillow review from first-timer users reveals, this material is unlike anything you’re accustomed to sleeping on. And we can confirm this, as well. Expect a squishy-soft but supportive pillow that’s 10 lbs—so it’s hard to move around with one hand.
Product Care
While the cover is machine-washable, both the pillow and the pillow boosters are not. Instead, they need to be hand-washed, and as you might have guessed, this is not an easy task, especially when it comes to cleaning the Purple grid.
The Purple Original pillow, except for the cover, can’t be machine-dried either. Consequently, there are multiple reviews for Purple Pillow care that criticize this inconvenience.
All Purple pillows should be covered when used because UV light can lead to damage—and thus void your pillow’s one-year warranty.
Advantages
- Very comfortable
- Adjustable height
- Durable
- Highly responsive
- No fluffing required
Disadvantages
- Complicated to wash (handwashing only)
- Heavy
Purple Harmony Pillow Review
Materials and Construction
The Purple Harmony Pillow consists of two layers.
The cover (92% nylon fiber and 8% spandex fiber) is interlaced with a thin hexagonal (honeycomb-shaped) grid, also known as the Deluxe Hex Grid. This is made of Purple’s benchmark material: hyper-elastic polymer.
The body of the pillow is made out of lightweight, organic Talalay latex foam, reputed for its high aeration index (breathability) and purity. The Talalay core is what gives this pillow its loft and softness, while the fine hexagonal grid on the cover provides additional support for your head and neck, according to any official review of the Purple Harmony Pillow.
Feel
Floating. This pillow feels squishy at first touch, but it’s like you’re floating when you lean against it. The combination of the cloud-like sensation that the Talalay provides and the support of the hexagonal grid earns this pillow its name: Harmony.
A Purple pillow side-sleeper review shows that the regular height of the pillow may prove insufficient for taller people. Fortunately, Purple offers a bigger version of this pillow (king size), so you can pick between these two heights depending on your body type.
You’ll find more specific information on the pillow’s dimensions in the “Size Options” section featured below in this Purple Pillow review.
Weightless. Neither too soft nor too hard, the Harmony Pillow gave us a perfectly balanced feeling. At the same time, it sustained the weight of our heads and necks. Whichever sleep position we tried on this pillow, we could easily find our sweet spot.
Refreshed. The moisture-wicking properties in the cover of this pillow along with the overall breathability of the core material supposedly allow for uninterrupted airflow that defies heat-retention and sweating. Our tests confirmed the claims of many satisfied Harmony Purple Pillow reviews.
In fact, we were so impressed by this cooling effect that we ranked the Purple Harmony Pillow as second among the best cooling pillows available in the US market today.
Product Care
The cover of the Harmony Pillow can be machine-washed separately with same-color washables on a cold cycle and then laid flat to dry. The core can only be spot-cleaned when needed.
Advantages
- Medium softness level
- Responsive
- Cooling effect
- Option of two heights
- Washable cover
Disadvantages
- Pricey
- Needs airing out for 2–3 days after unpacking
Purple Plush Pillow Review
Materials and Construction
The Purple Plush Pillow is the most traditional looking in Purple’s pillow line.
The core is made of interlocked, low-density polyester fiber balls (also known as Smart Fluff), which is a very lightweight, highly aerated, soft material. Despite what some of you might think when seeing the core material, this pillow isn’t lumpy.
The unfortunately non-removable cover is a combination of lyocell and nylon, with relatively low density. There are also two parts of net-like fabric on its adjustable sides.
The innovative moment in this Purple Plush Pillow review is that the pillow has adjustable extensions, with zippers on both sides of the pillow. So what does this do? It helps the user change the firmness of the pillow by zipping and unzipping these extensions. This allows for three different levels of firmness that can be adjusted according to the user’s preference.
Feel
Cradling. The name clearly indicates it—the Purple Plush is soft, and it cradles your head during your sleep. As user reviews of the Purple Pillow like to say, this pillow is highly huggable.
Therefore, this one is not a good choice for those who prefer really firm pillows. For all others, the adjustable sides of the pillow can help in finding the right firmness.
An important note to make here is that the cloud-like fluffiness tends to get slightly flattened after a couple weeks of use. However, the change is insignificant, and it can be reversed by tumble-drying the pillow.
Cool. This pillow feels cool to the touch, and it remains thermally neutral during the night, which is good news for hot sleepers. However, the cooling effect isn’t as powerful as what we described in our Purple Pillow Harmony review—although it’s enough to prevent your face from sweating when you sleep.
Product Care
One big plus for this pillow is the fact that it’s entirely washable (on a low-heat cycle, of course), and it can also be machine-dried on low temperatures.
Advantages
- Neutral temperature
- Adjustable extensions
- Entirely washable
- Lightweight
Disadvantages
- Non-removable cover
- Needs regular fluffing
Size Options
To accommodate both larger and petite sleepers, Purple usually offers two different sizes of its pillows to successfully match each sleeper to their ideal Purple Pillow.
Purple Pillow
Currently, there’s only one size available of the original type of Purple Pillow, with the dimensions 24″ x 16″ x 3″. However, if we’re being thorough in this review of the Purple Pillow, we have to mention that you can personalize the height of the pillow with the help of the two Purple Pillow boosters that come with it.
But by how much? Well, one of the Purple boosters is 1″ and the other is 0.5″ thick. You can play around with the three heights that these boosters offer or add another to the equation if these aren’t enough for you.
As a note, more than one real review from Purple Pillow users says that physically larger side sleepers might have a hard time adjusting to this pillow.
Purple Harmony Pillow
This pillow comes in two different heights: 6.5″ and 7.5″
Their dimensions are the following:
- Regular: 26″ x 17″ x 6.5″, weighing 4.5 lbs
- Tall: 28″ x 17″ x 7.5″, weighing 5.4 lbs
Purple Plush Pillow
The Purple Plush Pillow also comes in two sizes:
- Standard: 26″ x 18″ x 5.5″ (max), weighing 3.6 lbs
- King Size: 35″ x 16.5″ x 6.75″ (max), weighing 4.4 lbs
Customer Service
With the exception of several reviews of the Purple Pillow from customers saying they’ve been put on hold for quite a while, there are almost no negative reviews concerning the customer service. This is out of more than 42,000 reviews, which is saying something.
There are two customer service departments, one for customer care, available at 888-848-8456 on business days, and a returns department, available throughout the week at 888-848-2305. Purple can also be reached through [email protected].
Terms of Sale
Trial and Return Policy
Purple offers customers a 100-day tryout period, starting from the delivery date. If the pillow doesn’t live up to their expectations, they can return it, undamaged and clean within this period and get a full refund. Purple strongly suggests using the pillow for at least 30 days to give your body time to adjust to it.
According to the reviews from Purple Pillow users who changed their minds, the return process is seamlessly organized.
If you wish to return your Purple Pillow, you can contact the returns department or write an email to [email protected]. But if you purchased the pillow from a retailer, the rules from the individual store will apply.
Shipping Policy
Shipping is free for the contiguous United States, while for Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Canada, the shipping costs are calculated at checkout.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t confirm the schedule in this Purple Pillow review for shipping. Due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the usual shipping times may be extended.
Warranty
There’s a one-year limited warranty for every Purple Pillow purchased, which starts on the original purchase date.
This warranty is, above all, intended to protect the customer from manufacturing defects that may reduce the pillow’s quality or make it unfunctional for normal, everyday use. This does not include localized firmness changes.
Keep in mind, using the pillow without a pillowcase can void the warranty.
Prices
Purple Pillows are undeniably on the high end of the price spectrum in the US bedding market. However, when comparing Casper pillows vs Purple pillows vs Parachute pillow reviews, it’s clear that Purple’s prices for similar-quality items are comparable to the other two.
The durability of the products is what justifies these prices according to the brand, and some users seem to agree with this statement.
The standard size Purple Plush Pillow is the cheapest option at $49, and the king size is $64. The Harmony Pillow is the most expensive, costing a whopping $159 in both available sizes. The regular, original Purple Pillow is worth $109.
In some Purple Pillow reviews, customers state that even though the Purple pillows are quite pricey, the discounts available are very limited.
Our team identified a decent number of opportunities for customers to get a price reduction:
- 10% vocational discount for students, teachers, truckers, military, first responders, and healthcare professionals
- Special occasion discounts
- Discount program based on referrals
- Special page dedicated to bundles and sales
Who Is Purple Pillow Best For?
- Neck-pain and headache sufferers. This one we’re basing on Forbes’s article on the best pillows for neck pain. Plus, any Purple Pillow chiropractor review would note that the Harmony is a great choice for people with neck issues. It provides both soft and firm support at the same time—with no additional strain to your neck muscles.
- Hot sleepers. The Purple grid enables uninterrupted airflow, and the thin cover is exceptionally breathable in Purple’s original pillow. The Talalay latex foam and polymer fibers in the Harmony are also aerated and breathable materials—in other words, perfect for hot sleepers. The Plush pillow is also temperature neutral and breathable but to a lesser extent than the other two, as we mentioned in the Purple Plush Pillow review above.
- The open-minded. As we discussed before, the sensations from Purple’s unique material is comfortable but unlike anything ever used as a pillow material. So before ordering your original Purple Pillow, you must keep an open mind for different pillow feels.
- Picky sleepers. We can’t characterize the Purple Harmony Pillow as soft, nor as hard, so it has been challenging to make a Harmony Purple bed pillow review on its softness. So, this one is ideal for softness-picky sleepers. The original Purple Pillow also falls into this category, whereas the Plush pillow is on the soft side of the firmness range.
- Calm sleepers. The Purple Pillow is 10 lbs in weight, meaning it isn’t something you can easily adjust during the night. So if you’re a restless sleeper who tends to flip your pillow around, this isn’t for you. However, the Purple Harmony and Purple Plush both have conventional weights and sizes that allow you to treat them like a regular pillow.
Who Should Look Elsewhere and Why?
- Restless sleepers. You can see from our review of the Purple Pillow that it’s quite heavy and therefore impractical for those who toss and turn during the night. Thus, the Purple Plush Pillow or the Purple Harmony Pillow may be a better fit for fidgety sleepers who want to take their pillow with them as they move around.
- Larger-bodied side sleepers. The low loft of the Purple Pillow makes it unsuitable for taller people who prefer sleeping on their side. At the same time, the loftier Purple pillows—especially the Purple Harmony Pillow—can be a good match, but not necessarily for those seeking more firmness.
Purple Pillow Review Summary
If used correctly, Purple Pillows will adjust around the pressure points in your neck and free you from neck-related headaches. In addition, you can combine these pillows with a Purple mattress—which is one of the best mattresses for back pain in the US—to create an ideal sleep haven (in this case, you’ll probably get the pillow for free).
All-in-all, Purple Pillows are exceptional in their materials and provide superior hi-tech support. The few practical negative points are their relatively complicated maintenance and their high prices. However, given the durability and comfort of these pillows, we must give a passing verdict for the value-to-price balance.
FAQs
Is the Purple Pillow good?
The Purple Pillow is well worth its price. It’s durable, comfortable, and offers anatomical support for the head and neck.
How much does a Purple Pillow cost?
The original Purple Pillow costs $109. Two different thickness pillow boosters are also included in this price.
How does the Purple Pillow work?
The Purple Pillow’s core is made out of a hyper-elastic polymer grid. Its peculiar design helps even out the pressure applied to it. Purple calls this a column-buckling technology, since the buckling of the columns in the grid enables any pressure to be evenly dispersed. In this way, the Purple Pillow can support the neck and head.
Can you wash a Purple Pillow?
Only the Purple Plush Pillow is entirely machine-washable. However, the covers of the Purple original and Purple Harmony can be machine-washed. The cores of these two should only be hand-washed (Purple original) or spot-cleaned (Purple Harmony).
Do Purple Pillows cause cancer?
All of the materials used in the production of Purple’s pillows are clean of harmful chemical materials, and the foam used is CertiPUR-US certified. So, no, they are not toxic, and they don’t cause cancer.
Is Purple better than memory foam?
Yes, in many ways. Purple’s polymer has better air conductivity and stays thermally neutral, whereas memory foam heats up with use.
Furthermore, memory foam takes time to shape to your body, which isn’t ideal for those who often change sleeping positions. The Purple grid, on the contrary, is instantly responsive, providing evenly dispersed support.
What’s more, wear and tear in memory foam pillows depends on how heavy the user is, so more strain will equal shorter durability. This isn’t the case with Purple’s hyper-elastic polymer, making it more durable by far.
For this, and all other practical reasons explained in this Purple Pillow review, the polymer used in Purple pillows is among the best state-of-the-art technologies for pillows.
