How Did the Leesa Mattress Make Our List?

Leesa, with its high-quality materials and superior comfort, is one of our favorite bed-in-a-box brands out there. Moreover, as if the fantastic construction of the mattresses wasn’t enough to write this in-depth Leesa mattress review and add it to our list of top-rated mattresses,, the Leesa also stands out from the crowd for several more reasons.

One, it’s eco-friendly, and two, it offers the chance to give back to the community. For every ten mattresses sold, Leesa gives one away to a homeless shelter, and because they are part of the One Earth program, they also plant a tree for every single mattress sold! We believe that these reasons are more than enough to prepare an in-depth review of the Leesa mattress. It’s amazing that you can rest assured that when you invest in your mattress, you are giving the gift of a good night’s sleep to someone less fortunate than you are. It’s a win-win situation!

Leesa Mattress Features

Leesa offers four models, two all-foam and two hybrid mattresses. So let’s delve into their features to help you decide which one is the best option for you.

Leesa Original Mattress Construction

Let’s start with our detailed Leesa Original mattress review. This mattress is made up of two premium components, namely, three layers of foam and a good quality cover. Measuring ten inches in depth, like many other bed-in-a-box mattresses out there, the Leesa is surprisingly 20% lighter than your average memory foam mattress. One of the main pros of the Leesa Mattress is that it’s made of high-quality memory foam that molds to fit the shape of your body. Want to know more before you make your decision? We have taken a detailed look at the composition of the Leesa mattress below.

  • The Cover: Consisting of a high-quality poly-lycra material, similar to those used in gym wear, the Leesa mattress cover is light, durable, and breathable. Unfortunately, there’s no Leesa Mattress topper on offer at the moment.
  • The Comfort Layer: The top layer is constructed out of two inches of cooling foam, a comfortable and bouncy material similar to Avena foam. It’s strategically placed above memory foam to keep you cool while sleeping.
  • The Transition Layer: The middle layer is made up of two inches of memory foam, providing support and relieving pressure from aches and pains.
  • The Foundation Layer:
  • The base layer is made up of six inches of high-density foam that provides ample support to both the sleeper and mattress’s upper layers. If you check out our review of the Leesa Hybrid mattress, you’ll see that this layer represents the major difference between the Leesa Original and the Leesa Hybrid.

Leesa Hybrid Mattress Construction

As you probably know, a hybrid construction features both memory foam and innerspring elements. Therefore, with this mattress, you can get the best of both worlds: excellent stability and high adaptiveness to your body’s shape and movements. Keep in mind that this model used to be known as the Sapira luxury hybrid mattress by Leesa.

  • The Cover: The cover is made of a polyester and Lycra blend known for actively wicking moisture away from the body. It’s stretchy and doesn’t shift across the mattress too much when you move.
  • The Top Layer: The 1.5-inch-thick top layer is made of cooling foam. The holes in its design allow for maximum air circulation, so you won’t sleep hot at all. At the same time, it responds perfectly to pressure and adapts to your body.
  • The Contouring Layer:
  • It’s a 1.5-inch-thick memory foam that provides pressure relief and enjoyable body contouring. In many Leesa beds reviews, users say that their lower back pain disappeared once they started sleeping on the Leesa Hybrid, which is expected considering the pleasant contouring it offers to the body.
  • The Core Support Layer: The next layer is the 1-inch-thick high-density polyfoam. This layer acts as one side of the sandwich nestling the pocket coil system in the Leesa Hybrid mattress. Its function is to provide a smooth transition between materials.
  • The Support Layer:
  • The 6-inch-thick support layer consists of individually wrapped coils. As such, they move independently of each other, providing extended body contouring properties throughout the entire mattress. Additionally, the spring construction provides an excellent bounce. According to more than one Leesa review, this mattress is perfect if you like sleeping on the mattress, instead of in it.
  • The Foundation: The base layer of the mattress is made of 1-inch-thick high-density polyfoam. It supports the pocket coil system and the entire mattress.

Leesa Legend Mattress Construction

The Leesa Legend Mattress also features a hybrid construction. However, in addition to its pocket coils system, it has a layer of micro-pocket springs. This is the major difference you can notice if you compare the Leesa Hybrid vs the Leesa Legend mattress.

  • The Cover: The cover is made of a blend of polyester, recycled PES, organic cotton, merino wool, rayon, and spandex. Thanks to this unusual combination of materials, it’s very stretchy, soft, and breathable. Plus, the wool component adds to its moisture wicking properties.
  • The Top Layer: The 1-inch-thick top layer is constructed with comfort foam. Even though this layer contours to a sleeper’s body, it’s also quite bouncy. Therefore, you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. In addition, it’s hole-punched, so it contributes to the mattress’s breathability.
  • The Contouring Layer: Just like in the Leesa Hybrid mattress, the contouring layer is made of memory foam. However, as you can see in most Leesa Legend mattress reviews, it’s a bit thinner (1 inch). Nevertheless, it offers pleasant pressure relief and cushioning.
  • The Zoned Support Layer: This layer features micro-coils at the head and foot of the mattress. They increase the bounciness of the bed and give additional pressure relief for shoulders. The middle part of this layer consists of polyfoam, which provides great spinal support.
  • The Transition Layer: Between the micro-coils and the pocketed coil system, there’s a one-inch thick layer of high-density polyfoam. This is to create a transition zone between two spring layers.
  • The Support Layer: It’s constructed with individually wrapped coils, which reduce motion transfer. Since this layer is the same as in the Leesa Hybrid mattress, take a look at our detailed Leesa Hybrid mattress review above.
  • The Foundation: The 1-inch-thick layer of high-density polyfoam provides great support to the entire mattress.

Construction of Studio by Leesa

Studio by Leesa is the latest addition to the Leesa family. It’s a memory foam mattress designed to provide great comfort to sleepers on a budget without compromising on quality.

  • The Cover: Just like the Leesa Original, the new model features a super breathable and soft mattress cover.
  • The Comfort Layer: The top layer is made of responsive memory foam, which contours to a sleeper’s body. When analyzing this Leesa memory foam mattress for our review, we noticed that side sleepers will love this cushiony layer.
  • The Transition Layer: This is another layer of foam, which provides great pressure relief. It allows sleepers to enjoy a restful night of sleep without any aches and pains.
  • The Support Layer: The base layer is also made of foam and it provides ample spinal support to a sleeper.

Comfort

We believe that when assessing how comfortable a mattress is, we need to look at several different factors, including the firmness level, sinkage, and support.

Firmness Level

Before we delve into discussing the firmness of these products, it’s important to remember that firmness levels are subjective. Every person will feel a mattress differently and consequently have a different opinion. To make this review as unbiased and honest as possible, we sought the help of a panel of reviewers. The result?

The Leesa came in with a reasonably average firmness level, which is in line with most reviews of the Leesa mattress. It was voted 6 out of 10, with 10 being the most firm. As this is considered medium firm, it’s most likely best suited to average sleepers.

According to our findings, the Hybrid falls in the range of 7–7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which makes it a fairly firm mattress. That may be due to the bounce provided by the coil system, which makes you feel like you don’t sink into the mattress at all.

According to most Leesa hybrid review articles, this firmness level isn’t suitable for side sleepers. However, it’s great for stomach and back sleepers.

On the other hand, the Leesa Legend mattress is a bit on the softer side, so most side sleepers will enjoy the level of pressure relief it provides.

Finally, the new model—Studio by Leesa—is medium firm, so it will suit most sleepers.

Sinkage

The amount of sinkage for the Leesa Mattress is slightly more than that of other mattresses. When you’re sitting on the edge of the bed, the sinkage is about 3–4 inches. Prefer less sinkage? Perhaps the Casper Mattress may be a better choice for you. If you’re interested, you can read our Casper Mattress review for more information and a better look at Leesa vs Casper.

When it comes to the Leesa hybrid mattress, the sinkage isn’t too deep, again making it especially good for stomach and back sleepers.

However, if you still need even more support, you may want to look at an alternative, such as the Saatva mattress. In our in-depth review of Saatva, we compared it to the Leesa Hybrid and concluded that the Saatva as a hybrid mattress with more of an innerspring feel provides a lot less sinkage than the Leesa Hybrid, making it perfect for people who need to sleep on an especially firm surface.

Finally, we found in our in-depth Leesa mattresses reviews that the Leesa Legend allows a high level of sinkage even though it’s a hybrid model. Therefore, it’s best suited for side sleepers.

When it comes to the new model—Studio by Leesa, many Leesa reviews agree that this mattress offers some nice body contouring without letting you sink in too much. So you won’t feel stuck in a mattress, which is especially important if you like to change positions.

Support

High-density polyfoam in the Leesa’s foundation layer provides ample support to all types of sleepers. In addition, the mattress easily conforms to the body and thus aligns the spine in all sleeping positions, which is often emphasized in Leesa Original mattress reviews.

When it comes to the hybrid models, they offer great support and pressure relief at the same time thanks to a combination of memory foam and coils.

Studio by Leesa is also designed to provide good support to most sleepers. It keeps a sleeper’s spine in a natural alignment in all sleeping positions, as many mattress reviews confirm. However, if you tend to sleep on your stomach most of the time, you might need a firmer bed.

Temperature Neutrality

While the Leesa Original is a memory foam mattress, it appears to sleep cooler than similar mattresses of its kind. It’s recommended for hot sleepers because the foam layers allow the air to flow freely. Thanks to its microcell structure, the top layer is very breathable, which additionally improves the mattress’s temperature regulation. However, some of the Leesa beds reviews claim that it sleeps hot.

Similarly, Studio by Leesa is quite breathable for a memory foam mattress. Still, if you’re a hot sleeper, you should know that this mattress will trap some heat.

Thanks to the coil system, the Leesa Hybrid and Leesa Legend are designed to provide maximum breathability. What’s more, their top layers made of cooling foam are strategically placed between the sleeper and the memory foam in order to further increase airflow.

We’d like to point out that Leesa hybrid review articles written by users are also in line with our findings here. So it’s safe to say that the Leesa hybrid models provide excellent air circulation, which allows you to stay fresh and cool while sleeping.

Edge Support

Edge support is particularly important if you have a sleeping partner because you’ll want to use the entire mattress surface. Also, if you often use your bed for sitting, for example, while you’re getting dressed, you should consider this feature.

With the Leesa, we found the edge support to be rather weak. When you sit on the edge of the bed, there is a dip, which has also been mentioned in a prominent Leesa review on this mattress. However, we didn’t feel any significant issues lying on the edge of the mattress.

Thanks to the coil spring system, Leesa’s hybrid models have excellent edge support. The coils provide the bounce that keeps the body stable on the surface of the mattress. When compared to memory foam mattresses, such as the Casper mattress, they perform much better in this department.

Although you may feel a slight compression because of the memory foam layer, this isn’t remotely uncomfortable. Therefore, if you’re someone who tends to sit a lot on the edge of the bed, you definitely won’t be disappointed with the Leesa Hybrid or Leesa Legend.

Motion Transfer

When you’re sharing the bed with a partner or even a pet, it’s essential to consider how it will feel when someone moves a lot or has a restless night. According to our trusted research panel, it has relatively moderate motion transfer. The cooling foam and the memory foam work well together to minimize any vibrations or movement. After analyzing existing Leesa Mattress reviews, we can say that they confirm our findings.

Our tests on both Leesa Hybrid and Leesa Legend mattresses have shown that tossing and turning on the surface can cause a small amount of disturbance, while a heavier body doing so can cause a slightly greater disturbance. Our mattress reviews of Leesa show us that the mattresses isolate motion relatively effectively, thanks to their individually wrapped coils.

Durability and Maintenance

The Leesa mattresses are made from very durable materials and crafted in the US. They all feature a hard-wearing, robust structure that is expected to last many years.

Although Leesa doesn’t recommend taking the mattress cover off, you can easily clean it with some mild detergent or homemade solution if needed. If you want to additionally protect your mattress and prolong its lifespan, you can use a waterproof Leesa mattress protector.

When it comes to regular maintenance, you just need to vacuum your mattress using an upholstery brush from time to time. It’s also recommended to rotate your mattress from head to toe every three months. However, you should never flip it because the foam layers lose their function when placed upside down.

Customer Service

If you need any help or additional information about Leesa’s products, you can contact the customer support team by phone or email. They’re available from Monday to Friday. Although they do their best to be helpful, in some Leesa mattress reviews, customers complained that they didn’t receive a reply in a timely manner.

Who Should Buy the Leesa Mattress?

The Leesa Original Mattress:

  • Back or stomach sleepers: The Leesa provides great spinal support while contouring to the shape of your body. You won’t feel stuck, and it’ll keep your spine in perfect alignment.
  • Hot sleepers: Compared to other foam mattresses, the Leesa has good temperature regulation thanks to its cooling foam, which increases airflow.

The Leesa Hybrid Mattress:

  • Back or stomach sleepers: If you need minimal sinkage with high firmness levels to provide the same level of support to every inch of your body, the Leesa Hybrid offers exactly that. As noted in almost any of the Leesa Hybrid mattress reviews, thanks to the bounce from the coil system, the body can’t sink in too much.
  • Couples: If you sleep with a partner, you’ll love this mattress because of the excellent edge support it offers. We noticed that this is usually mentioned as the key difference between the Original and Hybrid mattresses. Also, we think the motion isolation of this mattress is great, so you won’t feel any disturbances if your partner is a restless sleeper and moves a lot during the night.
  • Hot sleepers: Mattress reviews for Leesa highlight that the coil system allows for great airflow, so you’ll be able to sleep cool throughout the night. In addition, the top layer, made of cooling foam, increases the mattress’s breathability and prevents it from retaining body heat.
  • Heavier people: Since the Leesa Hybrid is a firmer mattress with a coil system that offers ample support, it’s suitable for people of above-average weight. In numerous comparisons of the Leesa Hybrid vs the Leesa foam mattress, this is emphasized as one of its advantages.

The Leesa Legend Mattress:

  • Back or side sleepers: Since the Leesa Legend is a bit softer mattress, it’s a good pick for side sleepers, who typically need a high level of cushioning. Plus, its zoned support keeps the spine in perfect alignment while allowing great pressure relief.
  • Hot sleepers: The Leesa Legend has great temperature regulation thanks to the combination of the coil system and cooling foam. In more than one Leesa Legend mattress review, customers have reported that this model doesn’t retain much body heat.
  • Sleepers who prefer a bouncy mattress: Even though the Leesa Legend is a softer bed, it won’t let you sink too much into the mattress, so you won’t feel stuck.

The Studio Mattress:

  • Value seekers: This mattress is an amazing option for people who are looking for a quality mattress, but have a limited budget. The Studio offers a good balance of pressure relief and support, so it’s comfortable for most sleepers.

Who Should Look Elsewhere and Why?

  • Heavier-weight people: If you weigh more than 200 lbs, the Leesa Original Mattress may provide inadequate support, especially if you sleep on your stomach, which is mentioned in more than one Leesa mattress review. In that case, you may want to consider one of the two luxury hybrid models by Leesa, which provide better support thanks to the coil system. Generally, people of above-average weight need an innerspring or hybrid mattress, which will have a more robust structure.
  • Some side sleepers: According to previous owners, the Leesa Original and the Leesa Hybrid may be a bit too firm for lighter-weight side sleepers. If you prefer a softer touch when you sleep on your side, then perhaps these models aren’t the right choice for you. Instead, you can check out the review of the Leesa Legend mattress, since it offers a greater level of pressure relief.
  • People who like memory foam mattresses: Although the Leesa Hybrid and Leesa Legend has a layer of memory foam, you should know that you won’t have a feeling of sleeping “in” the mattress since there’s a great amount of bounce thanks to the coil system. Instead, you can check out our top 10 list of memory foam mattresses.
  • People on a budget: The Leesa Hybrid and Leesa Legend are luxury mattresses that are a bit pricier. So if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, these models might not be for you.

FAQs

Where can I go to buy a Leesa mattress?

The best place to purchase any mattress is the company’s official website, and this product is not an exception to the rule. However, if you prefer the more traditional way of shopping, the company also has several brick-and-mortar stores for you to visit. Leesa mattresses are also available in West Elm and Pottery Barn stores.

Which mattress is better, Leesa or Casper?

Both Leesa and Casper are all-foam mattresses, but they offer different feels. Depending on your sleeping preferences, you should choose which one is better for your needs. If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll probably prefer the Casper, which has a zoned support system. However, if you tend to sleep on your stomach, the Leesa might be a better choice since it’s a bit firmer and it sinks less.

Is the Leesa mattress good for back pain?

The Leesa mattress’s top layer contours nicely around your body, and it therefore alleviates pressure points. In addition, it will also fill in the space below your lower back, but it still doesn’t let you sink too deep into the mattress. Instead, the design helps keep your spine in perfect alignment, which is key in preventing back pain.

Can I put a Leesa mattress on a box spring?

It really is not recommended that you put your Leesa mattresses on a box spring. Instead, the team behind Leesa recommends that you place your mattress on a foundation or platform bed. This way, not only will you reap all the benefits of a Leesa mattress in terms of comfort, you’ll also prolong its lifespan.

Can I put a Leesa mattress on the floor?

Yes, technically you can put a Leesa mattress on the floor. However, this is not the best option since it can potentially cause mold to form since your mattress won’t be able to breathe. If you decide to place it on the floor anyway, just lift it up and lean it against the wall once a week.

Are Leesa mattresses non-toxic?

Nothing toxic is added to a Leesa mattress. The company only uses foams that are CertiPUR-US certified, so they don’t contain any PBDE flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, or similar toxic compounds.

Does a Leesa mattress smell?

When you unpack your new mattress, you may note a slightly unpleasant smell. However, this is pretty typical for most foam mattresses when they’re unboxed. The smell should disappear within somewhere around a week, so it’s best to keep the mattress in a well-ventilated room.

How long can a Leesa mattress stay in the box?

You can leave the Leesa mattress unboxed for up to 30 days from the date you placed your order. When it comes to the Leesa Hybrid mattress, you can leave it in the box for up to 60 days from the time you placed your order.

How long until I can sleep on my Leesa mattress?

Before you sleep on your new mattress, you should wait for it to fully decompress. It usually fully expands in just a few hours, but it’s best to give it a full 24 hours. However, it may take a few days for you to get the perfect feel from your Leesa mattress.

Do Leesa mattresses soften over time?

Yes, just like almost all memory foam mattresses, Leesa mattresses soften a bit over time. That’s why their warranty specifically does not cover this issue.

Does Leesa remove an old mattress?

If you choose a white-glove delivery service, the delivery guys can also remove your old mattress. White-glove delivery includes the in-home setup of your new mattress, and it costs $100. For old mattress removal, there’s an additional fee of $50. Also, this service is available only in certain locations.

Should I flip my Leesa mattress?

The short answer is no. You shouldn’t flip your Leesa mattress because its layers have a specific order. If you flipped the mattress over, they would lose their purpose and you will no longer get all the benefits that your Leesa mattress offers. You can read more about its maintenance in our detailed Leesa mattress review above.
