About Saatva

As you can see in many Saatva mattress reviews, this is a reputable mattress manufacturer and seller. It’s also one of the rare ones that started off as an exclusively online brand, and went on to open a viewing room in New York.

The company’s been in the business since 2010 when it was selling only its flagship mattress model—the Saatva Classic. In 2015, Inc. magazine listed Saatva among the top 500 retailers—it ranked 101.

Today, Saatva offers high-quality bedding, frames, and bases, as well as several mattress models.

Saatva Classic Mattress Review

Having been on the market for over a decade, this hybrid innerspring mattress is the brand’s original model and also the most popular one among customers.

The best part is, there’s not just one, but six versions of this mattress that you can get in eight regular mattress sizes. More precisely, Saatva offers two heights (11.5” and 14.5”) and three firmness levels you can choose from.

The following in-depth “dissection” will show you why the Saatva Classic falls in the luxury mattress category. Let’s start with its greatest advantage—its four-layer structure.

Construction

3’’ Euro Pillow Top Covered With Organic Cotton

The plush and luxurious-looking pillow top is one of the most highlighted features in practically any review of this Saatva mattress, and for several good reasons.

Firstly, the cover consists of pure, GMO-fee, pesticide-free organic cotton that is cool to the touch. Then, the breathable cotton textile covers a generous 3” euro pillow top. This layer is filled with memory foam and fibers that softly contour the body.

What’s more, the cushioning material is microbe-resistant. Adding to this its hypoallergenic properties you’ll know why we couldn’t help but feature Saatva Classic in our leading pillow-top mattress list.

Back-Support Layer

Given its versatile design, it’s easy to tell this classic model is much more than just a regular pillow top mattress.

For instance, the next layer—a high-density memory foam spread out across the middle section, makes it great for lumbar support. This is good news for people who suffer from lower back pain or have emphasized pressure points.

Individually Pocketed Coil System

The individually wrapped recycled-steel coils give the mattress great responsiveness that you won’t fail to notice the minute you lie down on it.

These also provide suitable pressure relief for different parts of the sleeper’s body—an advantage that is mentioned in both the Saatva soft and the Saatva firm mattress reviews

So, regardless of the firmness you choose, the Saatva coil system technology will boost your comfort level because it will accommodate your body.

Perimeter Edge Support

The Saatva Classic has a design feature specifically aimed at better edge support–the dense memory foam rails in which the comfort coils are encased. This feature will leave you worry-free of sagging and distortions in the mattress shape.

Innerspring Base Layer

This mattress features an additional layer with tempered steel coils for extra support and pressure relief, which is in part what makes it an amazing innerspring mattress.

Moreover, these coils in the base layer provide perfect support and stability for sleepers, as well as an airflow outlet, so this can be considered as an excellent cooling feature, too.

Comfort

Our personal experience with the Saatva Classic is one of absolute comfort. This is also backed by various customer reviews. This mattress can fit just about any type of sleeper and preference, which is why we ranked it among this year’s top mattress choices.

Firmness & Sinkage

One of the greatest advantages of this mattress is the fact that customers can decide on the level of firmness before ordering it.

The Saatva Classic mattress comes in three different comfort levels: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm. If you’re looking for five-star-hotel-level luxury sleep, then the Saatva Luxury Firm mattress is the right choice.

The mattress is designed to provide the perfect balance between “cushion firm and contouring support”, reaching 6–7 on the 1–10 firmness scale. This allows you to sleep comfortably in any position, regardless of whether you prefer sleeping on your stomach, side, or back.

With any mattress, sinkage depends largely on the user’s weight, and quite naturally on the firmness level that you choose for yourself.

Lightweight individuals, especially side sleepers may prefer the plush soft version of this mattress that ranks just 3 on the scale. Inversely, heavier individuals should go with the luxury firm and firm models.

Support

Given its customizable firmness, as well as features like the double coil system and an extra support layer across the middle section, the Saatva Classic provides great spinal support for any type of sleeper and any sleeping position.

Nevertheless, keep in mind that there’s a weight restriction of 300 lbs on each side of the mattress. So, people of above-average weight that need stronger support can find it in the Saatva HD mattress, as many reviews advise.

Temperature Neutrality

The Saatva Classic mattress is suitable for hot sleepers for several reasons. The first one is the organic cotton cover, which is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking. The second reason is the individually pocketed coils in the first coil system layer, but what’s most effective is the coil layer at the base.

All this allows the mattress to have excellent air circulation. The increased airflow not only cools but also prevents the mattress from trapping moisture and developing mold.

Edge Support

As mentioned before, there are special edge-support memory foam rails in the Saatva Classic. This dense foam is intertwined with the individually pocketed coils, providing unbeatable edge support.

The edges are so supportive that anyone can easily sit down or get out of bed without feeling like they’re slipping off. Not only that, but it also provides the durability Saatva is so famous for. After all, sagging is unacceptable for a luxury mattress such as this one.

Motion Transfer

Although adequate, we can’t say that Saatva’s Classic excels in this aspect. If you make, for example, a quick Saatva vs Casper comparison for this feature, you’d see the latter taking the prize since it’s an all-foam mattress.

Although the individually wrapped coils and top layer memory foam of the Saatva Classic offer a decent level of motion isolation, they don’t eliminate it completely.

So, if you’re an extremely sensitive sleeper sharing a bed with a partner who tosses and turns a lot, Saatva’s hybrid mattresses might not be the best option for you. However, when compared to many other innerspring mattresses, they do absorb movement much better.

Durability and Maintenance

The Saatva Classic mattresses are made of high-quality materials that are quite sturdy (and heavy).

The two coil layers are made out of high gauge tempered steel, which in itself is very durable. But what makes this model additionally solid is its coil’s interlocking design, the edge support system, and the organic cotton covering it.

So, you’ll be looking at a solid 15 years of usage, as confirmed by the Saatva warranty.

Regarding maintenance, the mattresses are quite easy to keep in excellent shape. Flipping the mattress isn’t recommended because it’s heavy, and you can injure your back if you decide to lift it on your own.

Instead, try rotating it every six months. This will distribute the pressure put on the mattress from sitting or lying down constantly on one side.

If you need to clean stains off of it, make sure you use a small amount of antibacterial soap on a damp sponge with a small quantity of lukewarm water. For drying, try a steam vacuum if possible. If not, let it dry on its own.

You can also use a mattress protector if you want to avoid spills and accidents from damaging your Saatva mattress.

Other Saatva Models

From a Saatva organic mattress to a mattress specially designed for heavier individuals and children mattress—if there’s one thing that is not lacking with this brand, it’s a versatile offer for any type of sleeper.

Saatva Latex Hybrid

This 12” eco-friendly and organic Saatva mattress is designed to offer a health-friendly and hypoallergenic sleep experience for the most sensitive among us. Still, being organic is just one of its many advantages.

For starters, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is wrapped in hand-tufted organic cotton with a euro-top cover. The GOLS-certified cotton and the New Zealand wool underneath it offer excellent breathability, thermal isolation, and above all, fire protection.

What Saatva Latex Hybrid reviews also mention is that this model has a completely different feel from the Classic one. This is due to the 3” natural Talalay latex layer that offers adapted pressure relief in five zones.

This makes the mattress more responsive and comforting for those struggling with body aches. In addition to the latex, the mattress has an individually wrapped coil system that is also adapted to three different zones.

Saatva Youth

Naturally, it’s from parents’ Saatva Youth Mattress reviews that we learn that children sleep well on this mattress, but it’s our investigation into its “anatomy” that backs these claims.

Saatva Youth has a two-sided flippable design with different firmness levels for those aged 3–7 and 8–12. This offers two different ways in which this mattress aids children’s spinal alignment.

Underneath the organic cover, on the softer side, there’s a generous memory foam layer of five zones. On the firmer side, the Saatva Youth has a high-density foam layer for better support. But what ultimately makes this mattress supportive is the dual-sided coil unit in its core.

Saatva HD

This model incorporates practically every supportive material you can find in modern mattresses. Since it’s designed for the comfort and support of heavier sleepers, this is very important.

Firstly, there’s a latex layer offering 5-zoned support, followed by a generous memory foam layer, and finally a steel coil layer for firmer support.

But besides people with above-average weight, couples will also very much enjoy the mattress. Although it’s a hybrid, we found it isolates motion quite well thanks to the thick comfort layer.

However, one thing you need to know before purchasing the HD is that it’s not compatible with slatted bed frames, regular foundations, and box springs.

Loom and Leaf

Firstly, this model has a 5lb high-density memory foam layer, responsible for much of the pressure relief and comfort that this mattress provides.

Several other features also accommodate the sleeper’s needs like the gel-infused foam layer that prevents heat-trapping. The firmer foams placed in the middle and the base of the mattress allow for greater stability and support.

Hot sleepers and side sleepers seem to be particularly satisfied with the Loom and Leaf model as it helps proper spinal alignment and allows the air to circulate so the heat can dissipate easily.

If you want a more detailed insight into the pros and cons of this model, feel free to read our detailed review of the Loom and Leaf mattress.

Modern Foam

Another great choice for side and combo sleepers is this Saatva mattress. If you’re into memory foam mattresses, but you’re worried about your spine or lower-back health, then the Modern Foam Mattress can be yours, and your partner’s solution.

Made out of three CertiPUR-US®-certified memory foam layers and a lower-back-supporting latex layer, it provides that luxurious Saatva comfort without sucking you in.

In addition to the gentle cradling feeling that will lull you to sleep, the mattress features excellent motion isolation, so you won’t wake up when your partner moves.

Another great thing about the Modern Foam mattress is its cooling gel layers and egg-cradled breathable foam at the top that make up the so-called dual-phase cooling layer.

Solaire Customizable

Users of this mattress sound quite surprised in their Solaire mattress reviews. The reason? It offers 50 firmness settings! Indeed, you can adjust the mattress to match the exact firmness that you need to doze off.

Yet, this is not the best feature that the Solaire has to offer. It’s the dual settings that the queen and king size has, so partners can adjust the firmness level according to their preferences.

On the flip side, the separate air chambers in the mattress make it a bit noisier compared to regular mattresses.

However, the Solaire Mattress relies on Talalay latex and gel-infused memory foam, so it’s not hard to see why side sleepers praise this quality, as it goes easy on their shoulders and hips. In addition, there’s a moisture barrier, which prevents bacteria growth.

Zenhaven

The Zenhaven mattress is the only flippable Saatva mattress for adults. It’s an excellent choice for those who like to switch firmness levels between medium and hard. There’s the Luxury Plush side (4–5) and the Gentle Firm side (7–8).

Another thing we loved about it is the organic design, the amazing comfort, and the natural Talalay latex layers that offer great temperature regulation. The fact that it has all these features is why Saatva Zenhaven is our top choice among latex mattresses

That said, there’s one type of sleeper that may not get the support they need from this mattress —heavier people. According to practically every Zenhaven mattress review, this model is best suited for lightweight and average weight sleepers.

Customer Service

Our own experience and the lack of customer complaints reassure us this brand’s customer service is excellent, with representatives who are kind, attentive, and efficient. Plus, the service is available 24/7 to help you out with any questions you may have and to deal with complaints.

Terms of Sale

Trial Period and Return Policy

Saatva offers a 180-day free trial on the mattress in the luxury of your own home. The conditions are simple and pretty straightforward. If you decide the Saatva mattress isn’t the one for you, you can simply return it and receive a full refund, minus $99 for transportation.

Keep in mind that mattresses can’t be restocked. You’ll have to double-check the measurements before you confirm your mattress order.

Shipping

The company offers its customers free white-glove delivery on a scheduled day and time, which you’re advised to respect. If you aren’t at home at the delivery time, you will have to cover the $99 cost of transportation.

Therefore, contact the company well in advance if you can’t meet the drivers on the day of delivery. If you cancel your delivery beforehand, you won’t be charged the fee.

Saatva Warranty Period

Saatva mattresses are under a guarantee by the manufacturer itself that they’ll be defect-free for a non-prorated period of 15 years. If your mattress is deemed defective in the first two years of this period, you can replace your mattress with a new one.

The company also offers an alternative “Fairness Replacement Option” for customers if their bed is deemed defective.

In this case, if you think your mattress should be replaced, Saatva offers to let you keep your original mattress, and instead of repairing it, you get a brand new mattress with a Saatva mattress discount

In the case of returning your mattress after 3–5 years, you can get a new one for only 30% of the original price you paid.

If you find your mattress defective during years 6–10, you can replace it for 50% of the original price you paid, and in years 11–15, you’ll pay 75% of the original price. In these cases, you won’t be required to pay for the delivery of your mattress, either.

It’s important to note that the warranty is valid only for the 11.5″ mattress when used on an adjustable base and not for another Saatva mattress height, like the 14.5″, since that mattress can’t be used on an adjustable base. Also, Saatva takes complaints only in writing.

Price

Many consider Saatva a company that creates true luxury. Plus, it offers entirely American products, designed and manufactured in the Saatva facilities in the States.

Indeed, made with the highest quality of materials and designed to fit several different sleepers, in addition to their added luxury features, these mattresses are quite affordable—especially when compared to similar mattresses in this category.

Even when there’s no Saatva mattress sale, the pricing starts at as little as $699 for the smallest size of the Saatva Youth Mattress to $3,396 for the biggest (split King size) for the Saatva HD model.

Therefore, it’s best that you check the mattress price on the manufacturer’s official website. Also, you can sometimes find Saatva coupons, which can get you a great deal.

Additionally, excellent financing options with monthly payments and 0% APR are offered by the company. So you don’t need to wait for a mattress sale to get your piece of luxury.

Who Should Buy a Saatva Classic Mattress?

In our Saatva mattress review, we’ve considered all the features offered by this mattress, as well as the consumer experience, in order to find out who can benefit most from this mattress.

As this mattress is designed to offer features that meet the needs of almost all types of sleepers, it’s suitable for nearly anyone in terms of getting a good night’s sleep.

However, take into account your preferred sleeping position and other sleeping preferences when choosing the comfort level of your Saatva mattress.

  • Side sleepers: The Plush Soft, the softest version, is perfectly suited for side sleepers. This comfort level is especially suitable for those who lie on their arms during the night and experience “dead arm” symptoms.
  • Sleepers who like euro top mattresses: People who want to feel like they’re sinking in and are hugged by their linens would also find the Plush Soft perfectly suitable.
  • Couples: The Saatva Luxury Firm mattress is ideal for couples. If you share your bed with someone and need as much space as possible, Saatva is a great choice thanks to its excellent edge support. Also, reviewers claim that if you and your partner have different mattress preferences, the Luxury Firm model will meet you both halfway.
  • Sleepers with back problems: If you need strong lumbar support or have health issues for which a doctor has prescribed a firm sleeping surface, the Firm Saatva mattress is what you should look for.

Who Should Look Elsewhere and Why?

  • People who like a memory foam feel: The Saatva Classic model is not for people who like to sleep on a memory foam mattress. Although it has some memory foam inside it, it doesn’t offer the same feeling as memory foam mattresses. Alternatively, you can look at a Saatva plush soft mattress review to see if that option is soft enough.
  • Sleepers who prefer a greater sinkage level: People who want to sink in deeply in the mattress may not like the Saatva hybrid mattresses. The support the mattresses offer is primarily due to the coils, which is also why there’s not enough sinkage.
  • Side sleepers of below-average weight: The firm version of the Saatva Classic mattress might feel uncomfortable to lightweight side sleepers. The plush soft version is more suitable for them.
  • Those looking for an easily movable mattress: Due to their two coil layers, Saatva mattresses are quite heavy, so you will need help moving them.

Conclusion

In the category of premium mattresses used in high-class hotels around the world, Saatva mattresses rank pretty high. The versatile models are designed to keep customers loyal and satisfied.

Simply put, their quality and different comfort levels appeal to sleepers of different categories. All in all, we can conclude that Saatva mattresses are deserving of the adjective “luxurious.”

FAQs

Are Saatva mattresses non-toxic?

Saatva uses 30% plant-based foam that is CertiPUR-US-certified. Therefore, it doesn’t contain harmful substances, such as ozone depleters, heavy metals, and formaldehyde.

In addition, its cover is made of organic cotton, and as a flame-retardant barrier, it uses a natural thistle barrier or New Zealand wool instead of toxic chemicals.

Do I need to flip my Saatva mattress?

You shouldn’t flip your mattress. On the contrary, you need to make sure its layers remain in their particular order to serve their purpose.

That said, rotating it from head to toe is recommended, at least once a year. In this way, you assure its longevity by wearing it evenly. You can find out more about how to maintain your mattress properly in our in-depth review above.

Do I need a foundation for a Saatva mattress?

It’s always better to use a foundation for your mattress in order to prevent mildew from forming. Saatva recommends using their original foundation, but you can also use your old foundation if it’s in good shape.

What’s important is that your warranty is still valid even if you opt for your own foundation.

Can a Saatva mattress be used on an adjustable base?

Yes, the 11.5″ Saatva mattress is compatible with an adjustable base. While this applies to the 11.5″ Saatva luxury mattress, keep in mind that the requirements for what 14.5″ the rests on are different—an adjustable base is not suitable for the taller mattress.

Does the Saatva mattress need a box spring?

No, the Saatva Classic mattress and most of the other models don’t require any specific, particular base. Except for the Saatva HD, all the rest can be placed on a box spring, platform bed, or an adjustable base.

You can use whatever suits you the most. Just remember that the same does not necessarily apply to Saatva’s 14.5″ mattress, since we’ve been focusing on the 11.5″ here.

How much does a Saatva mattress weigh?

Saatva mattress reviews from customers certainly agree on the following—though remarkably comfortable, the brand’s mattresses weigh well above the average. For instance, the weight of a 11.5″ queen-sized model is 11lbs, while the 14.5″ version in the same size weighs about 120lbs.
